Cambridge and Surrounding Areas
Cambridge is a residential and University City about 55 miles north of London by road and with rail services reaching London in 60 minutes to 70 minutes. During the last fifteen years there has been a transformation in communications, the construction of the A45 in the early seventies, now part of the A14 running between Felixstowe to the east and the M1/M6 to the West, the M11 motorway in the mid seventies, the M25 London Orbital in the mid eighties and the recent electrification of the railway to London. Stansted Airport, which serves many international destinations, is approximately 25 miles to the south, off the M11.
Cambridge is a blend of historic town, ancient university and regional centre, but it also forms the base for many high-technology industries. The first scholars appeared, from Oxford, in 1209 with the first College, Peterhouse being founded in 1284. The success of Peterhouse encouraged the foundation of many other Colleges.
